SHULLSBURG - Throughout most of his career, David Byrne has been known primarily as a USAC National Midget Series competitor as well as more recently, a contender in the premier within the United States Auto Club, the Silver Crown series. As the 2014 season approaches and while Byrne will continue making appearances in the Silver Crown car, he'll also add another machine to his arsenal: a Winged Sprint car.
Plans for the 2014 racing season call for the Byrne Racing Team to race in the USAC Silver Crown Series as well as several races with the Winged Sprint car with Must See Xtreme Car Series as well as the Auto Value Super Sprints Series. In addition, Byrne will also race for the six-race "King of the Wing" Series promoted by Davey Hamilton, which features three events in the Midwest and three races in California about Thanksgiving time.
The first races of the 2014 racing season for Byrne Racing in the Winged Sprint car are tentatively slated for the weekend of April 11-12th as the Must See Xtreme Sprint Car Series will start the year as part of the Southern Shootout Weekend at Five Flags Speedway in Florida and Mobile International Speedway in Alabama on consecutive nights. Then the following month, the 27-year-old will make his first USAC Silver Crown Series start on Saturday, May 17 at the immaculate 0.686 mile progressively banked paved oval of Lucas Oil Raceway, located west of Indianapolis in Clermont, Indiana.
"I'm really looking forward to continuing our 2013 success in the Silver Crown Car. We were fast every time out but could only close the deal at LOR where we finished third," the Shullsburg driver stated. "I'm also looking forward to our new venture with the Winged Sprint car. Those things are wicked fast. It should be a nice challenge for me and the team," he added.
"David and Chuy (Byrne Racing Car Chief James Sandberg) are really pumped up for the 2014 season. The two have meshed and really work good together and it has been translating to our performance on the track," added Byrne Racing car owner and father, Steve Byrne. "We will build on our successes in the Silver Crown Car and then jump into our new adventure with the Winged Sprint car. The challenge will be to pick races that fit David's racing style. Business commitments will limit our number of races, but we should be able to make some noise wherever we go."
Despite running only half of the 2013 schedule, Byrne still managed a 15th-place finish in the USAC Silver Crown Series points standings with one top five finish, which was a third at Lucas Oil Raceway on July 27 during Brickyard Speedweeks. He also recorded two top 10 finishes as well, including a seventh-place showing at Pikes Peak International Raceway in Colorado. In his USAC Midget, he finished just outside of the top 10 at 11th in the final standings.
Byrne began his racing career when he was 8 years old in 1992. Then the 2001 season was one of change, as he moved up to a National Midget, where he has spent the past 13 seasons with 10 of those competing in the USAC National Midget Series. In 2011, Byrne made the jump into the USAC Silver Crown Series. Now for 2014, he'll add a Winged Sprint Car to his vast array of experience.
For the 2014 racing season, both of Byrne's cars, his #40 USAC Silver Crown Series entry and his #40 Winged Sprint Car will carry sponsorship support and decals from the family-owned business, Bytec Resource Management, as well as Truck Country, J&D Performance Incorporated, Steele Performance Parts, Simpson Racing Products and M.P.H Promotions.
