Short-handed Monroe suffers in second half

MONROE - The Monroe High School boys soccer team, playing short-handed with just two subs, battled through a scoreless first half Thursday, but Watertown scored four goals in the second half to beat the Cheesemakers 4-0 at Honey Creek Park.

The Cheesemakers have four players on vacation who will return for games next week.

Sophomore Devan Schulte played goalie and had 12 saves for Monroe. Due to the limited number of players available, senior Atticus Pond, who was the Cheesemakers' starting goalkeeper last season, played midfielder against Watertown.

Monroe drops to 0-2.

"It wore down our goalie a little bit," Vasquez said. "I was very happy with how we played. Watertown is a very good Division 2 team, and they are much more physical than Wisconsin Heights (which beat Monroe 3-1 Tuesday). I think it was good for our younger guys to feel what it's like to play a team who can put nine or 10 senior starters out there."

Watertown took the lead on Jared Hill's goal at 55 minutes, 11 seconds. Watertown's Alex Milbrath, who had two goals, scored his first goal at 60:48 to extend the lead to 2-0.

"We gambled a little bit at the end of the game," Vasquez said. "We had all of our guys push up trying to get back in the game instead of sitting back, and we gave up two late goals."

Watertown's Zac Beine scored a goal at 78:11, and Milbrath scored again at 87:41.
