ALBANY - Trailing by 10 points after the third quarter, coach Derik Doescher and his Albany boys basketball team rallied back in the fourth against the Barneveld Golden Eagles Thursday and won 55-53.
Tied at 53 apiece with only 20 seconds left, a clutch jumper by Isaiah Shell put the Comets on top with just seconds remaining.
"We fought hard tonight," Doescher said.
After trailing in each of the first three quarters, Albany was able to put together a solid fourth quarter in securing the win.
"We know that if you want to be a good basketball team that you have to beat the top teams," Doescher said. "And I feel that we beat a pretty good team tonight in Barneveld."
Shell led the way for the Comets, scoring 24 points, while fellow senior Mitchell Kauk added 16 points.
Black Hawk 55, Juda 25
JUDA - The Black Hawk boys basketball team made a trip to Juda on Thursday and continued their strong start to the season by limiting the Panthers to only four points in the first half on their way to a 55-25 win.
For the Warriors, coach Corey Manlick thought his team came out of the gates strong and determined.
"I thought that we came out focused tonight," he said. "Overall, I thought our defense did a pretty good job in the first three quarters, (but) near the fourth we started to give up some buckets."
As Black Hawk continues its impressive play, Manlick knows that the team has to be consistent.
"We're very excited about each game," he said. "But we know that we have to keep level-headed and play at a solid level every game."
Heath and Seth Butler had solid outings for Black Hawk, scoring 20 and 19 points respectively.
While they were held scoreless in the first quarter, Panthers coach James Pickett thought his team's intensity was strong at the start.
"I thought we came out and punched them (Black Hawk) in the mouth in the first quarter," he said. "But defensively, they were just able to put together a string of buckets."
Juda will take on Pecatonica next Tuesday.
Pecatonica 57, Monticello 56
MONTICELLO - Coming off of last week's loss to Barneveld, the Pecatonica boys basketball team traveled to Monticello looking to get a win over the Ponies and escaped with a wild 57-56 victory.
After an early lead, Monticello found themselves trailing by 18 points at one point in the third quarter. But the Ponies were poised to make a comeback and reclaimed the lead late in the fourth.
A layup by A.J. Hendrickson with 20 seconds remaining in regulation, however, put the Vikings back on top, and proved to be the difference for Pecatonica in a one-point victory.
Hendrickson paced the Vikings with 19 points, including the deciding lay-up. Junior Drew Schliem added 17 points, including half of Pecatonica's 10 three-point field goals.
Lucas Marty and Ben May each scored 24 and 17 points respectively to lead the Ponies, who host conference foe Albany on Friday night.
