Shaky 'D' dooms Monticello

MONTICELLO - Errors haunted the Monticello baseball team in a 15-0 six-inning loss to Barneveld Thursday.

Barneveld (4-0, 1-0 Six Rivers East) rode the strong pitching of Weston Peterson to the victory. The Eagles, a Division 4 state qualifier last year, broke the game open with an eight-run sixth. Monticello (1-3, 0-1) committed four errors in the inning.

"Our defense didn't support our pitchers," Monticello coach Jason Pinnow said. "You can't win when you do that."

The Eagles scored three first inning runs after loading the bases with no outs.

"The first inning we didn't start out the way we wanted to," Pinnow said. "You can't do that against a quality team like Barneveld."

The Ponies had seven hits and no two-hits came from the same person. The Ponies also went without an extra base hit.

"We were knocking at the door, but we just couldn't push any runs across," Pinnow said. According to Pinnow, Monticello had a couple of innings where scoring chances were turned away by hitting into two fielder's choices.

Peterson pitched five shutout innings and gave up four hits.

Argyle 2,

Black Hawk 0

SOUTH WAYNE - Sophomore Stephan Shambrook's RBI single in the fourth inning and sophomore Jared Johnson's run-scoring base hit in the seventh provided the Argyle Orioles with all the offense they needed to blank the Black Hawk Warriors, 2-0, in Six Rivers East Conference action Thursday.

Winning pitcher Nate Thomas tossed a five-hit shutout and didn't allow a baserunner past second base. He struck out six and didn't walk a batter.

Sophomore Mike Walker took the loss for Black Hawk, surrendering just five hits with 13 strikeouts and four walks. Walker also went 2-for-3 at the plate.

Argyle (3-1, 2-0 Six Rivers East) will host Belmont Saturday. Black Hawk (0-3, 0-2 Six Rivers East) will travel to Albany Monday.

Darlington 14, Pecatonica 1

BLANCHARDVILLE - The Darlington Redbirds used a nine-run second inning to clobber the Pecatonica Vikings in five innings Thursday, 14-1.

Fourteen batters reached base in the big inning for the Redbirds with six walks, five base hits, a pair of errors and a hit batter. Junior Brandon Heins pitched three shutout innings and gave up just three hits and struck out four to get the win for Darlington. Senior Colton Carpenter went 2 for 3 for Darlington while Junior Taylor Berg went 2-for-3 for Pecatonica.

With the win, Darlington remains undefeated at 5-0 (2-0 SWAL) and will host conference foe Boscobel today while Pecatonica (1-3) hosts Potosi in a non-conference game.
