MONROE - The Monroe Parks & Recreation Department has openings in flag football for third- through sixth-grade boys and girls, football with the Cheesemakers, volleyball for fourth- and sixth-garde girls, volleyball with the Cheesemakers and karate.

Flag football

Boys and girls who sign up for flag football will meet from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Tuesdays from Sept. 14 to Oct. 26 at Recreation Park. The field is below the tennis courts. Registration for residents is $19 and $29 for non-residents. Schedules will be handed out at the first practice.

Football with the Cheesemakers

Youth football players will have a chance to meet and complete drills with the Cheesemakers from 1 to 3 p.m. Oct. 15, at the Monroe High School practice field. The drills will include catching, throwing, kicking and blocking. Players should wear tennis shoes and comfortable clothing. Everyone will receive a T-shirt donated by Monsignor Campion. The rain site is the Monroe High School gym. There is a $6 fee for Football with the Cheesemakers.

Volleyball

Volleyball players will meet Mondays from Sept. 13 to Oct. 25. The fourth-graders will meet from 3:30 to 4:15 p.m., the fifth-graders will meet from 4:15 to 5 p.m. and the sixth-graders will meet from 5 to 5:45 p.m. at the Northside School gym. Registration for volleyball is $19 for residents and $29 for non-residents.

On Sept. 20, all practices are from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Schedules will be handed out Sept. 20.

Volleyball with the Cheesemakers

Fourth- through eighth-grade girls will learn volleyball drills and skills with the Cheesemakers from 1 to 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 15, at the Monroe High School gym. Registration for Volleyball with the Cheesemakers is $6.

Volleyball players should wear tennis shoes and comfortable clothing. Everyone will receive a T-shirt donated by Monsignor Campion.

Karate

The karate class based on Tae Kwon Do with contributions from judo, boxing and other martial arts will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Behring Senior Center. The karate classes are open for children 7 to 12 and will meet from 6:15 to 7:15 p.m. Adults 13 and older meet from 7:15 to 8:30 p.m. The sessions run from Aug. 31 to Nov. 23, Nov. 30 to Feb. 24 and March 1 to May 24.

The cost to register for the karate classes is $40 for residents and $50 for non-residents with $5 off for each additional family member.

To sign up for the following programs, stop by the Parks & Recreation Department office located in the basement of City Hall, 1110 18th Ave., Monroe. The office is open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
