EAST TROY - Monroe High School senior Silas Setterstrom won the championship at No. 1 singles at the WIAA Division 2 East Troy sectional on Wednesday to qualify for state.
It marks the second straight year that Setterstrom will compete at the state tournament, which will be June 1-2 at the University of Wisconsin's Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison. Setterstrom lost to Whitewater's Brodie Runez 6-4, 6-2 in the first round at state last year.
"It was a really dominant showing by Silas at sectionals," Monroe coach Matt Bordner said. "We knew coming in that all of his Division 1 matches would prepare him well for this moment, and it really showed."
Setterstrom (17-9) defeated Waupun's Jeremy Ryno 6-2, 6-0 in a first-round match at the sectional. He then topped McFarland's Blakely Wiesman 6-1, 6-1. In the title match, Setterstrom beat Watertown Luther Prep's Ben Ruggles 6-0, 6-0.
Bordner is excited to see what is in store for Setterstrom at the state tournament.
"It's always great to see hard work pay off, and for Silas it really has boiled down to him working hard on his game and it paying off in his matches," Bordner said. "He had some high expectations coming into the season and really has handled it all really well and is competing at a really high level right now."
