SOUTH WAYNE - Black Hawk senior Shawn Woodruff rumbled 40 yards for a touchdown on a screen pass from Heath Butler right before the half and that was the kick-start the Warriors needed to roll to a 46-26 win over Cassville Friday.
Black Hawk (4-1, 4-0 Six Rivers Conference), ranked No. 2 in the WisSports.net Division 7 coaches' poll, used that play to jump-start a 14-point swing as the Warriors outscored the Comets 32-14 in the second half.
Woodruff ripped off a 68-yard TD run on the opening drive of the third quarter to give the Warriors a 22-6 lead.
"That was big because we got the ball at the half," Black Hawk coach Cory Milz said of the screen pass Woodruff scored on late in the second quarter. "We were looking at a 14-point swing and that is what happened."
It's a key stretch for Black Hawk which plays at Potosi next week before hosting Pecatonica-Argyle for homecoming and hosting Belmont.
"Going into this game we knew the next four games would tell us what ship we are on," Milz said. "Cassville is as good as anybody."
Woodruff rushed for 194 yards on 18 carries and scored two touchdowns and caught the 40-yard TD pass on the screen. Butler was 6 of 7 passing for 100 yards and two touchdowns. He rushed for 113 yards and had a 36-yard TD run in the first quarter.
Black Hawk's Chase Stietz rushed for 51 yards on 10 carries and caught a 10-yard TD pass in the third quarter. The Warriors had 471 total yards including 371 on the ground.
Cassville had three touchdowns of 54 yards or more in the game.
"Our goal was to eliminate their explosives and we didn't do a good job of that," Milz said of the Comets' offense.
