Season ends with national delight

On, April 3-4, Monroe Mat Rats had eight wrestlers participate in the ASICS USAW Kids Folkstyle National tournament in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

The club had five wrestlers place in the top eight in their weight classes and the team placed third in the team competition of the Schoolboy portion of the tournament. Wrestlers came from all over the United States to compete in the tournament. Two other wrestlers traveled to a Byron (Ill.) tournament.

At the national tournament in the Novice Division, Traiten Gorr received a bye in the first round of an 11-man bracket. He lost his first match to Matthew Weeks (Bear Country Wrestling Club-Ill.) in overtime, 6-4. He beat Nicholas Birkenholz (Maysvile, Mo.) with a major decision (8-0) but fell in the next two rounds due to an injury.

In the Schoolboy Division, Aaron Hesgard (48-man bracket) lost by major decision against Tyler Dion (Wagner, S.D.), 11-2, and to Devin Broukal (Owen County Cyclones, Ind.) by pin fall.

Kevin Klopfenstein (32-man bracket) pinned his first opponent, Sam Begin (Anoka, Minn.) then beat Brandon Tousey (Oconto) by a score of 5-3. He lost to Zach Nelson (Outlaws of Ill.) by a score of 2-0 and fell 5-4 to Connor Doak (Jr. Pioneers Wrestling Club, Ill.).

Dusty Burkhalter (10-man bracket) lost by pin fall to Christian DuLaney (Pinnacle Wrestling Club, Ill.) and topped Alex Penn (Fond du Lac) 7-0 and Joey Tauchen, (Bonduel) 5-2. Burkhalter lost to Ryder Clark (High Altitude Wrestling Club, Iowa) by pin fall and lost the fifth-place match by pin to Christian DuLaney (Pinnacle Wrestling Club, Minn.).

Ryan Hughes (17-man bracket) won his first match by decision over Cody Linssen (Park of Cottage Grove, Minn.), 5-4, before falling by pin to Brendan Sadeghi (Purler Wrestling Academy, Ill.) and Ethan Benoit (Redhawk WC, Ill.). This loss eliminated Hughes from the tournament and placed him in the top 12 in his bracket.

Reave Lincoln (9 man bracket) lost via pin to Edgar Ruano (RWC, Ill.). The next match Reave received his second bye before beating teammate Troy Gorr 4-0. He pinned Brandt Olson (Simley Wrestling, Minn.) and fell in the third-place match by pin fall against Sam Stoll (Kasson-Mantorvile, Minn.).

Troy Gorr lost to Nic Selchert (South Dakota) by pin fall before losing to Lincoln. In the seventh-place match he lost via pin to William Russum (Kaukauna).

Trevor Gorr (4-man round robin bracket) lost in triple overtime, 1-0, to Michael Johnson Jr. (Team Overtime, Ill.) in the first round. Gorr won his next two matches by pinning Jonathan Elliott (Sauk Prairie) and Joseph Kitslaar (Bay Port), giving himself a second-place finish in the tournament.

At the Byron meet, Mitchell Quinn finished second in the kindergarten- through second-grade division. Jacob Quinn finished second in the fifth- and -sixth grade division.

The two tournaments were the final meets of the wrestling season for the Monroe Mat Rats.
