Schuttler shines on the record in no-hitter

MONROE - Not to be outdone, Renee Schuttler showed Tuesday night why, at least by technicality, she's the ace for Monroe softball.

One night after classmate Carlie Olsen no-hit Baraboo, Schuttler was lights out, facing just one over the minimum and striking out a school-record 17 batters in her second varsity no-no, a 5-0 victory to open a doubleheader, shutout sweep of Madison Edgewood. The Cheesemakers won the second game 16-0.

"To do it in such dominating fashion is incredible," Monroe coach Dale Buvid said of Schuttler's game one performance. "She had it all going tonight."

In striking out the first 11 batters, Schuttler realized the corners of the strike zone were fair game."She also had an umpire that was giving her the inside corner," Buvid said. "Everything was really lined up for her."

"When I'm getting the corners in the first inning, I know it could be a pretty good game," Schuttler said.

Schuttler's rise ball was unhittable and her changeup was baffling. Her only slip-up came when she walked the leadoff batter after battling to a full count in the fifth inning.

"The walk? That's just being human," Buvid said.

Senior second baseman Kayla Rackow went a cool 3-for-4 at the top of the lineup and has emerged as a regular hitting machine.

Buvid called Schuttler "business-like" as she cruised along. Schuttler commented on how nice it was to hand the ball off to Olsen in the second contest.

"We really bring each other up and motivate each other," Schuttler said, "and we've really become close friends in the process."

Schuttler worked the first three innings of the 16-0 nightcap victory before leaving for Olsen, who struck out the side in the sixth before Meghan Roberts worked the seventh.

After Monroe stranded seven runners in the opener, the Cheese spread it on in the second game. Schuttler led the charge, clubbing her third home run of her varsity career to cap the scoring in a six-run, fourth-inning outburst. Fellow senior and the other creditee for the no-hitter, catcher Kylie Kaiser, drove in five runs with two hits.
