Schneider lets scoring do talking

MONROE - Brian Schneider is usually a man of few words when it comes to his basketball exploits.

That didn't change Friday, even after one of those nights all players dream about but few get to experience.

The junior guard made five 3-pointers in a sizzling shooting display that netted 27 points and powered Monroe to a 55-40 victory against Oregon in Badger South Conference play.

So, Mr. Schneider, ever had a game like that?

"Yeah, probably not like that," Schneider said.

And what led to the big outing?

"I don't know - just made one and it felt good," Schneider said. "Just kept taking it to them."

At one point three minutes into the third quarter, Schneider had 19 points and the Panthers had 18.

"Yikes! Wow," Schneider said.

And with that, the night's hero was off to celebrate a victory over a Panthers team the Cheesemakers defeated 37-32 on Dec. 3 in Oregon.

Schneider's play did plenty of talking for him. He opened the scoring with a 3-pointer and had 11 points at halftime, when Monroe led 21-14.

Schneider then hit three consecutive baskets to open the third quarter - one from the lane and a pair of 3-pointers from the left wing, giving the Cheesemakers (8-7, 3-4 Badger South) a 29-18 lead. His final 3 of the evening pushed Monroe's lead to 36-21 with 2 minutes, 30 seconds left in the third quarter and increased his point total to 22.

"I don't know what he ate this morning, but he was on fire," junior forward Joe Latimer said. "All we did was feed the fire.

"He was more aggressive this game than I've ever seen him before. He wanted to take that shot and knock it down. I like that."

So did Cheesemakers coach Pat Murphy.

"Schneider got us going," Murphy said. "It's about being confident and hopefully he's turned the corner. I'm not sure how much he was on Oregon's scouting report, but he'll be on teams' scouting reports now."

Schneider converted a three-point play to start the fourth quarter and, fittingly, it was his free throws with 4:14 left that gave Monroe its biggest lead at 53-31.

Murphy said he'd wait to watch the tape to determine if it was one of Monroe's best all-around efforts of the season. But he already knew he liked the way the Cheesemakers defended - especially against Oregon's offensive catalyst in senior guard David Solberg (five points).

"I liked how our effort was from the get-go," Murphy said. "We knew we had to set the tone on the defensive end. I don't think (Oregon) felt comfortable at all, and that's always a good thing when you get teams out of what they want to do."

Tyler Doering scored nine points for Oregon (9-5, 4-3).
