Schmitt wins title at 160

PRAIRIE DU SAC - Sugar River senior Ben Schmitt continued a banner wrestling season after winning a championship at 160 pounds at the Sauk Prairie Eagle Invite Saturday.

Schmitt went 4-0 and was one of four Raider wrestlers to place. In the title match, Schmitt defeated Watertown's Justin McFarland 10-4.

Hortonville won the Eagle Invite by outdistancing River Valley 348.5-314 for the title. Pecatonica-Argyle finished 11th (84.5 points) and Sugar River was 12th (73.5) out of 14 teams.

Sugar River's Mike Nolden (171) went 3-2 at the tournament and finished in sixth place after Sauk Prairie's Ben Wiersma defeated him 11-2. Sophomore Brooks Hendrickson (130) finished 3-2 and took seventh place after defeating Holmen's Dan Niccum 6-4. Senior Tom Veterlli (140) also finished seventh after defeating River Valley's Garrett Riek 7-5.

Pecatonica-Argyle juniors Chris James (125) and Ross Gilbertson at heavyweight each finished third in their weight classes. James went 4-1 on the day and defeated Hortonville's Jared Lucker 9-4 in the third place match. Gilbertson also went 4-1 and defeated Wauwatosa's Kevin Kanngieser 10-4 for third place.

Freshman Cody James took sixth after going 3-2. Juniors Eli Davis (145) and Ian Sigg (189) both took seventh place at their weight classes. Davis went 3-2 at the tournament and defeated Beloit Memorial's Josh Swedlund 10-3 for seventh place.

Sigg also finished 3-2 on the day and took seventh due to an injury forfeit by Madison La Follette's Spencer Lowery.
