Schmitt to grapple for gold Tuesday

WHITEWATER - Sugar River senior Ben Schmitt, at 160 pounds, will be wrestling for a gold medal today at the Mid-State Classic.

Schmitt opened the Mid-State tournament with a bye. In the second round he defeated Waukesha North's Jake Thein in a technical fall 21-5. Schmitt remained unbeaten on the season by defeating Mukwonago's Ryan Aprahamian 13-8 in the quarterfinals.

Michael Nolden won his first round match over Elkhorn's K.C. Verhoeven 11-8. He then lost a second round match to Kenosha Tremper's Dan Nieves who pinned him in 5:09.

Nolden pinned Beloit Memorial's Justin Day in the consolation round in 1:30.

Four other Raider wrestlers finished 1-2 on the first day of the tournament, including Brooks Hendrickson (130), Dylan Riley (135), Tom Vetterli (140) and Dan Nolden (152).

Pecatonica-Argyle junior Ross Gilbertson finished the day 2-1 at 215 pounds. Wrightstwon's Mitchel Lemke pinned Gilbertson in 1:38 in the first round. Gilbertson bounced back after a bye and pinned Harvard's (Ill.) Buddy Lasker in 1:11.

Fellow junior Ian Sigg (189) won his first round match by pinning Janesville Parker's Aaron Polzin in 1:11. Sigg was then pinned by Oregon's Kevin Sommers in the second round in 2:29. Belvidere North's (Ill.) Josh Pagan defeated Sigg 11-5 in a consolation match.

Pecatonica-Argyle had three other wrestlers finish 1-2 Monday, including Cody James (112), Ethan Averill (119) and Chris James (125).
