Schiro sisters propel New Glarus

NEW GLARUS - The Heidi Festival swim meet Saturday brought out the best in many New Glarus swimmers.

Francesca Schiro, 11, took first place in the 50-meter butterfly (41.59), the 100 individual medley (1:26.56) and the 50 breaststroke (45.39). Sammie Schiro, 10, won the 9-10 girls 100 IM (1:38.27), the 50 backstroke (46.79) and 50 butterfly (41.52).

Sugar River's Eli Zimmerman won the 100 IM in the 9-10 boys division (1:24.68), the 50 backstroke (39.03) and the 50 butterfly (35.66). Teammate Logan Ball in the 11-12 boys 50 freestyle (37.35) and 50 backstroke (45.04). Nina Schiro, 13, of Sugar River, finished first place in the 13-14-year-old girls 50-meter freestyle (31.61) and the 100 IM (1:22.59). Teammate Mazie Paradis in the 8 and younger girls' division won the 25 breaststroke (28.41) and the 25 butterfly (24.34).

Other winners for the Rapids included Jadyn Elgin (1:59.75) in the girls 8 and younger 100 IM, teammate Ruby Righter in the 50 freestyle (48.18) and Lily Maynard in the girls 25 freestyle (22.51) and Reagan Andersen in the 50-breaststroke in the girls 15-18 division. Briana Donnell, 15, of Sugar River, won the 100 IM in the girls 15-18 division with a time of 1:44.68 and Sugar River's Kiara Donnell won the 13-14 girls 100 freestyle (1:27.21).

Monroe's Anna Meritt won three individual events including the 50 freestyle (31.67), 50 backstroke (39.14), and the 100 backstroke (1:09.48). Elsa Schaefer, 10, won the girls 9-10 girls 100 freestyle (1:34.53) and Emily Meritt, 13, won the 13-14 girls 50 breaststroke (46.59).

The Rapids' 8 and younger 100 medley relay team of Riley Hoesly, Natalie Wahl, Elgin and Camryn Arnett finished first with a time of 2:01.74. In the 15-18 girls 200 freestyle relay, the Rapids' Ann Miller, Katie Stuessy, Maya Severson and Karley Toso won with a time of 2:36.28. The Sugar River girls 11-12 division 200 medley relay team of Kendra Wenger, Kramer, Francesca Schiro and Dylan Noll took first place (3:11.94).

Other winners for Monroe included Ava Foley in the 9-10-year-old 25 freestyle (37.65), Kayleigh Nesbitt in the 50 backstroke in the girls 11-12 division, and Savannah Brandt in the 50 butterfly in the girls 13-14-year-old division.

Sugar River's Kylie Herring won the girls 11-12 year-old 50 freestyle (30.16) and Linnea Tabaka won the 50 backstroke in the girls 13-14 division.

Emily Meritt teamed with Tabaka, Brandt and Brianna Weiss to win the 200 freestyle relay (2:24.12). The same quartet teamed up to win the 200 medley relay (2:47.43).

Francesca Schiro teamed with Abbygale Palmer, Libby Fuller and Chloe Kramer to win the girls 11-12 division 200 freestyle relay (2:51.08).

In the boys competition, Sugar River's Jacob Piper took first place in the 50 freestyle in the boys 9-10-year-old division (44.63) and won the 100 freestyle (1:43.97). Emery Johnson in the boys 8 and younger division won the 25 butterfly (29.61) and 100 IM (2:15.85). Peyton Yaun won in the 50 breaststroke (52.24), Mason Thompson in the 11-12 boys 100 IM (1:37.96) and Justin Palmer in the 50 breaststroke in the 13-14 boys division. Simon Zimmerman, won the boys 8 and younger 50 freestyle (1:00.17) and Brecklyn Thompson won the 8 and younger 25 backstroke (26.46). Sugar River's Charlie Tollefson won two events - the 11-12 boys 100 freestyle (1:30.24) and the 50 breaststroke (49.54).

The Sugar River boys 8 and younger 100 freestyle relay team of D.J. Donell, Lance Brecklin and Jackson Erstad took first (2:06.87).

Piper teamed with Karson Wenger, Ben Lukszys and Eli Zimmerman to win the 200 freestyle relay (3:28.54). In the 11-12 boys 200 freestyle relay, Ball teamed with Connor Piper, Luke Brecklin and Mason Thompson to finish first (2:50.40). In the boys' 8 and younger 100 medley relay, Sugar River's Brecklyn Thompson, Simon Zimmerman, Johnson and Lance Brecklin took first (2:03.43). In the 200 medley relay, Ball teamed with Luke Brecklin, Mason Thompson and Cole Maynard to finish first (3:20.81).
