MONROE - Monroe High School junior Dylan Scace was stretching in the infield Monday evening and almost missed reporting for the 1,600-meter run. He had to run to check in and then back to the starting line.
After Scace toed the starting line at the Richard Glendenning Green-Lafayette County Invitational, the rest was history. Scace won the 1,600 in a meet record time of 4 minutes, 39.71 seconds. He broke the record he set last year (4:44.29).
"I was going out to stretch, and I thought the girls had one more lap," Scace said. "This is the first time I have ever been late for a race, and I ran my best time. I wasn't going out to break the record. I was just going out to compete and win."
Monroe boys track coach Scott Mosher had the team split into two teams - Monroe Red and Monroe White. Benton-Scales Mound-Shullsburg racked up 210 points to capture the title in the six-team meet. Monroe Red team finished second (135) just ahead of Albany, which took third (127). Monroe White placed fourth (117), and Pecatonica-Argyle was fifth (61).
"It gives everyone two or three events, and it makes the meet a closer score," Mosher said of competing as two teams. "We kind of do a competition. It's exciting to watch everyone. You kind of get worn down going against the same teams in the conference. These small schools have some great athletes we get to compete against."
Monroe senior Trevor Aebly of Monroe White won both the 110 high hurdles (16.11) and the 300 hurdles (45.07).
"It felt really good," Aebly said. "I have put in a lot of time through the years."
Aebly said he prefers the 110 hurdles because his endurance isn't as strong in the 300 hurdles. He has his sights set on contending for a conference championship in the 110 hurdles.
"I would like to be up there in the conference and win it hopefully," he said.
Sophomore Jordan Montgomery of Monroe White won the 100 (11.66) and 200 (23.85).
"I'm more tired out," Montgomery said. "I have to do more activities on the weekend. I have to keep working on improving."
Montgomery's best time in the 100 is 11 seconds, and his best time in the 200 is 23.3 seconds.
"The goals I have for myself are 11 seconds for the 100, and I want to try to beat 23 (seconds) for the 200 this year," Montgomery said.
Sophomore Kyle Legler of Monroe White won the 3,200 (10:29.40). Senior Andy Johnson won the pole vault (10-0).
Senior Josh Smith of Monroe Red won the 800 (2:17.42), and junior Brayden Zettle won the triple jump (41-6).
Albany sophomore Evan Blumer won the discus (143 feet, 9 3/4 inches).
