Saxby, Adkins carry Monroe

EVANSVILLE - With the weather threatening to cut their game short, the Monroe baseball team answered with a complete showing of offensive and defensive play in their 10-3 victory over host Evansville.

Sean Saxby set the scoring pace for the Cheesemakers, as the junior rallied with two RBI singles in the first two innings, putting his team up 4-0. The Blue Devils crept back with three runs in the bottom of the third, but early in the fifth, Monroe recaptured the momentum thanks to a clutch hit by Carter Adkins. With two outs in the fifth, Adkins nailed a double to bring in three runs for Monroe, extending their lead to 9-3. An extra run in the sixth provided enough security for Lucas Neuenschwander on the mound.

The junior pitcher picked up the win with a complete game, allowing nine hits, three runs and two walks, while striking out three.

"I thought we did a great job in putting the pressure on (Evansville) early," Cheesemakers coach Dustin Huffman said. "We had some players come up with some clutch hits to give us that early-game momentum."

Monroe (4-19, 1-11) will look to continue their impressive play of late as they head into the playoffs.

"We looked comfortable in tonight's game," Huffman said. "And that's good to see especially as we approach regionals next Tuesday."
