BELLEVILLE - Despite being decimated by ACL injuries, the Sugar River girls soccer team found a way to knock off Watertown Luther Prep 2-1 to complete an unbeaten Capitol Conference championship season.
Sugar River (16-2, 8-0 Capitol Conference) has had four players lost for the season due to ACL injuries, including leading scorer Vanessa Narveson, goalkeeper Karina Moen and senior defender Christina Funseth.
Sugar River sophomore Brooke Larson scored the first goal for the Raiders. Sophomore teammate Nicole Sanders scored the game-winning goal with about three minutes to go.
"The girls are finding ways to win," Sugar River coach John Ziperski said. "We are still on a roll. Our offense has been tough to find. We achieved one of our goals to win the conference title back."
Sugar River sophomore Taylor Legler has missed the last three weeks due to mono. Sugar River received a No. 3 seed in the WIAA Division 3 regional and will host sixth-seeded Mauston at 7 p.m. Thursday in Belleville. Monroe received a No. 5 seed and will play at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at No. 4 seed Whitewater.
"We hope to have her back Tuesday or Wednesday," Ziperski said. "Hopefully, that will give our offense some more punch."
