MONROE - Jack Schluesche's summer training for the cross country season will include a total distance comparable to running to Chicago and back.
Schluesche plans to run 270 miles this summer and he's already off to a banner start after winning the Red Run 5K with a time of 21 minutes, 40 seconds Monday at Twining Park.
Schluesche, a sophomore at Monroe High School, was eager to see where his training is at early in the summer in the second annual Red Run.
"I was really looking forward to it to get into shape," Schluesche said.
All of the proceeds from the run go toward scholarships for Green County students that attend the University of Wisconsin. Erin Cassidy, the vice president of the UW-Alumni Association of Green County and race director, said the club handed out five scholarships this year and nine in 2012.
"We are hoping to raise $1,000," Cassidy said. "This is becoming our big fundraiser."
The number of scholarships each year hinges on the run and donations through Founders Day where UW alumni get together.
"It depends year to year on the applicants and the funds we have," Cassidy said.
The top women's finisher was Brooke Foley (24:04). Max Patterson, 9, Monroe, won the boys kids run for the second straight year and Elsa Schaefer, 9, won the girls kids run.
Molly Hlubek, a race volunteer who received a UW scholarship last year, is excited the program is continuing. Hlubek will be a sophomore at UW in the fall, where she is majoring in kinesiology.
"I think every bit helps your community and helps kids go to college," Hlubek said. "College is so expensive right now. I was very fortunate to get a scholarship."
Schluesche is working on improving as a runner. He understands a spot in the top five for the Cheesemakers will be available in the fall.
"I need to get a little faster over the summer," he said. "I need to work on my form when I'm getting tired."
Can he be in the mix for a top five spot in the fall?
"Who knows," he said. "I'm shooting at doing what is best for the team."
