BARABOO - Monroe senior Rachel Root qualified for state in the 100-yard backstroke and the 200 individual medley Saturday.
Root finished second in the 200 IM with a personal record time of 2 minutes, 13.96 seconds and fourth in the 100 backstroke (58.89) at the WIAA Division 2 Baraboo sectional. Root's time in the backstroke was also a PR.
This will be Root's fourth straight state trip. The state meet will be Friday, Nov. 9 in Madison.
"I was definitely happy especially since it's my senior year," Root said. "The state qualifying times keep getting faster and faster every year. I was sad the relays didn't make it. The relays are the most fun to swim. I'm really looking forward to state."
DeForest won the sectional title 370-308 over Milton. Monroe finished 10th at the 12-team sectional.
Each one of the Cheesemakers' swimmers had a personal record time in at least one event. Monroe seniors Sarah Kind and Briana Katzenberger set PRs in the 50 freestyle and were part of three relays that each set a PR. The Cheesemakers' 400 freestyle relay team of Kind, Angie Beaver, Katzenberger and Root finished ninth with a PR of 3:56.77. In the 200 freestyle relay, senior Anika Nelson, teamed with Kind, Beaver and Katzenberger to take 11th with a PR of 1:51.28. The 200 medley relay team of Beaver, Root, Kind and Katzenberger took 10th with a PR of 1:58.07.
"The relays were strong and each and every member gave it their all, but the times were not enough to get us to state with a relay, which was hard for the girls," Moser said. "I am so very proud of them though. They worked hard to do what they did today at sectionals and it is disappointing, but they can't be disappointed in what they accomplished this season.
Nelson (29.23) set a PR in the 50 freestyle and also was a member of the 200 freestyle relay that set a PR at the meet. Shelbly Coffey had a PR in the 100 backstroke (1:35.41).
