MADISON - Monroe junior Rachel Root broke the school record in the backstroke and finished seventh at the WIAA Division 2 state meet Friday night.
Root, who set the backstroke record in 2009 (:59.85), swam a record 59.10 seconds in the 100-yard backstroke at the University of Wisconsin's Natatorium and was just one spot away from medaling.
"She swam faster at the sectional, but you can't be disappointed," Monroe coach Linda Moser said of Root's performance. "She swam her heart out. She really wants to beat 59 seconds and I think she will work on that in Gators."
Root also finished 11th in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1 minute, .66 seconds.
"The last 25, she was so tired," Moser said. "You can't ask for anything more. She was seventh at state in the backstroke and 11th in the butterfly. She's a very dedicated and determined swimmer. She really wanted to get up on the podium. She truly has nothing to feel bad about."
Milton swept the top three spots at state in the backstroke on its way to winning the Division 2 state championship for the second straight year. Milton's Katelyn Holmquist won the state championship in the backstroke with a time of 56.08 seconds and helped the Red Hawks outdistance Shorewood 236-193 for the state title. DeForest finished third (159) and Badger South rival Fort Atkinson took sixth (144).
Milton sophomore Bridgette Alexander finished as the state runner-up in the backstroke and Chelsea Calhoon was third.
Alexander also won her second straight title in the 200 individual medley. The Red Hawks also won state titles in the 200 and 400 freestyle relays.
