MADISON - The Rock County Fury girls hockey team knocked off the Middleton co-op 3-2 Saturday to win a sectional championship and advance to the state tournament this weekend.

It marks the first state berth for the Rock County Fury team that is comprised from players from Beloit Memorial, Beloit Turner, Janesville Craig, Janesville Parker, Milton and Monroe. The team includes Monroe sophomore Ally Einbeck and freshman Cammi Ganshert. It also marked the first time the Fury has beaten Middleton Metro Lynx this season.

The Fury (16-10-1) will play Hayward at 11 a.m. Friday at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum-Alliant Energy Center. Maggy Henschler scored one goal and had two assists to lead the Fury.

"To beat them in their rink for a berth to go to state is really cool," Rock County Fury coach Dave Soddy said. "Most teams don't take the Rock County Fury serious when we walk in the rink. It's amazing the respect some of the coaches have for us now. It's another step forward."

The Fury's Dani Heitsman scored the first goal on an assist from Henschler at the 15-minute, 54-second mark in the first period. About 30 seconds later, Henschler scored a goal to extend the Fury's lead to 2-0.

The Fury got a third goal from Bailey Cronin on Henschler's second assist at 9:33 in the second period to take a 3-1 lead.

Middleton junior Julia Dragoo scored two goals for the Metro Lynx. The Metro Lynx were the Badger Conference champions and beat the Fury in two previous games.

Rock County Fury goalie Molly Gross had 29 saves.

"We have a bunch of competitors," Soddy said. "These girls don't want to lose. They believe in it and they want to do it."
