MONROE - Monroe sophomore Cammi Ganshert is in her second year playing hockey on the Rock County Fury co-op team, but she will get her first chance to play a home game in front of the home fans this week.

For the first time, the Rock County Fury will play a game at SLICE Arena. The Fury will host Cedarburg at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Monroe Activities Director Jeff Newcomer requested one girls hockey game be played in Monroe this season. A second game at Monroe will be played Feb. 4, and it will be a doubleheader with the Fury playing Viroqua at 4 p.m. and then the Monroe boys hockey co-op playing Viroqua in the nightcap at 7 p.m.

"Last year there was no game played in Monroe," Newcomer said. "I wanted to make sure we had one this year."

Since the Fury have players on the team from Beloit Memorial, Beloit Turner, Janesville Craig, Janesville Parker, Monroe, Madison Memorial and Clinton, Rock County Fury coach Dave Soddy wanted to have home games in several different rinks this year to showcase players to hometown fans.

"The Fury have players from several different schools, and they wanted to spread the games around this year," Newcomer said. "It's a good opportunity for Cammi to play in front of her classmates."

The Fury are coming off a state tournament run last year.

Ganshert has experienced three different state tournaments and meets. She was on the Fury team that advanced to state last year. She qualified for the WIAA Division 2 state track meet last spring and in the fall she was an alternate on the Monroe-New Glarus girls swim team's 400-yard freestyle relay that went to state.

The Fury are off to a 3-1-1 start this season and return the bulk of their players from last year's state qualifying team which defeated Onalaska 3-2 in overtime in a sectional semifinal. The win by the Fury snapped Onalaska's four straight years of state tournament berths. The Fury then beat Middleton 3-2 in a sectional championship game to earn a state berth.

Ganshert is coming off a freshman year during which she scored three goals and had four assists.

Junior Maggy Henschler is the Fury's leading returning scorer after racking up 20 points last year with 12 goals and eight assists. Junior Danielle Heitsman scored 19 points last year with eight goals and 11 assists.

It could be more than just a one-year scheduling option for Monroe to host girls hockey games. Newcomer said when scheduling for next season comes around, he will request for at least one more home game.

"It would be nice to have a doubleheader every year," he said of a date with a boys hockey game, too.
