SPRING GREEN - The Monroe High School volleyball team forced a fifth set and was on the brink of upsetting third-seeded River Valley Tuesday in a WIAA Division 2 regional quarterfinal.

However, the Blackhawks handed the sixth-seeded Cheesemakers a heartbreaking loss 18-25, 25-14, 25-17, 24-26, 15-11.

"It was an obvious sad ending," Monroe coach Heidi Witt said. "We have seven seniors who wanted to continue their season. It was a well-played match. We definitely gave them a run for their money. It was anyone's game tonight. We had a shot in the end. It just wasn't in the cards tonight."

Monroe senior Whitney Wells had a team-high 11 kills and four aces, and senior Alicia Kuester had 10 kills and 13 digs. Junior Alysha Witt racked up 18 assists, and senior Hannah Neuenschwander had 17 assists.

Senior Lexi Hilliard posted a team-best 18 digs. Junior Sydney Mathiason had a team-high five blocks, and senior Chloe Schroeder had four blocks.

Monroe finished the season 15-16.

"They didn't have to walk out of the gym with their heads down," Witt said. "They were a better team this year and more focused. We fought hard for every point. That was noticeable in our matches and by other coaches in the conference. Hopefully, they will continue to work hard to win and improve."
