JANESVILLE - Even sporting long sleeves, Kris Rieder wasn't bothered by the heat Thursday night.
Rieder scattered six hits and tossed a nine inning shutout to lead the Monroe Senior Legion baseball team to a 4-0 win over Racine in the second round of the American Legion Class AAA Region 7 Tournament.
"Tonight was the best I have seen him pitch," Monroe coach Eric Losenegger said. "It was 90 degrees and he was wearing long sleeves. He didn't let the heat bother him."
Monroe (11-8) broke the game open, with a three-run seventh inning.
"I told the kids before the game, it doesn't have to end tonight," Losenegger said.
Monroe's Matt Woodstock coaxed a bases loaded walk to help Monroe take a 1-0 lead. Kramer Henning, who went 4 for 5, then hit a two-run double to right center to give Monroe a 3-0 lead.
Monroe tacked on a run in the eighth. Kevin Klopfenstein led off with a single. Taylor Riese followed with a single. Tyler Malcook then came through with an RBI single that drove in Klopfenstein as an insurance run.
Monroe pounded out 13 hits and rebounded from a first-round, 13-3 loss to the Kenosha.
Riese was 2 for 4 and Malcook was 2 for 5. Monroe will play either Janesville and Kenosha today.
"We get to go back another day," Losenegger said. "That's all you can ask for."
