MONROE - A heart-pounding and roller-coaster moment came at the end of the Monroe-New Glarus girls swim team's dual meet against Oregon-Belleville on Tuesday.

Oregon-Belleville was announced as a one-point winner. Then came a recount.

After conferring with meet officials and checking the scoring on a computer, the result was overturned and Monroe-New Glarus clipped Oregon-Belleville 85-84 at the Green County Family YMCA. The Cheesemaker swimmers went from a feeling of loss to jubilation in a span of five minutes.

"You could kind of see it (disappointment) in their faces," Monroe-New Glarus coach Linda Moser said when the score was incorrectly announced the first time. "We thought if we won the 400 freestyle relay we would win the meet. After they waited five minutes and it was announced that we won 85-84 they were excited, screaming and jumping in the water."

In the 400 freestyle relay, senior Maddie Hammer teamed with her younger sister, freshman Mekenzie Hammer, senior Grace Keith and Ganshert to win the event in 4 minutes, 23.35 seconds.

The Cheesemakers won six of the 11 events, and Maddie Hammer had a hand in winning four events. Hammer also won the 200-meter freestyle with a time of 2 minutes, 14.49 seconds and the 100 freestyle (1:02.03).

"Even though Maddie does so well in the water she is the first one who comes up to me and said she shouldn't be breathing so much," Moser said. "Maddie is always looking to improve. Not only in her races, but for the girls on the team so we can get better. Maddie and Grace (Keith) my senior leaders are always looking at what we can do better. That is what a true athlete does whether they finish first or sixth."

Monroe-New Glarus swept the top two spots in the 200 individual medley and the 100 freestyle. Oregon took the top two spots in the 400 freestyle.

Monroe-New Glarus remains unbeaten (4-0, 3-0 Badger South) in dual meets.

"It's anyone's ballgame after Madison Edgewood and McFarland," Moser said of the conference. "After Madison Edgewood and McFarland it's wide open. You never know on a given night what will happen."

Maddie Hammer teamed with junior Emily Meritt, freshman Francesca Schiro and junior Cammi Ganshert to win the 200 freestyle relay (2:03.77).

Mekenzie Hammer won the 200 IM (2:36.25) and the 100 backstroke (1:08.06). Francesca Schiro took second in the 200 IM (2;46.67) and second in the 100 backstroke (1:32.04).

Keith finished second in the 100 butterfly (1:16.96). She teamed with Mekenzie Hammer, Schiro and Meritt to take second in the 200 medley relay (2:16.72). Ganshert added a second-place finish in the 100 freestyle (1:09.82).

Monroe-New Glarus will compete in the six-team Lodi Invitational on Saturday and then swim another conference dual at Stoughton on Tuesday. Oregon-Belleville beat Stoughton by two points earlier this season.

"We can get all the meets we can that are yard pools," Moser said, which is the setup at Lodi. "It's a field at our competition level."
