Redbirds, Vikings and Orioles net first wins

BLANCHARDVILLE - The Pecatonica girls basketball team got a triple double from senior Kimee Chandler and the Vikings stormed back from a 10-point deficit and beat Highland 60-50 Tuesday night.

The Cardinals jumped out to a 10-0 first-quarter lead. The Vikings came back and sliced the deficit to six, 14-8 at the end of the first quarter.

Chandler scored 10 of her 19 points in the first half and helped the Vikings rally for a 26-25 halftime lead. Chandler finished with 19 points, 13 rebounds, 10 steals and added seven assists and three blocked shots.

The Cardinals regained the lead in the third quarter, but the Vikings stormed back behind Ellie Gifford's seven points, which included a 3-pointer and junior Alisha Esselstein's 15 points.

Pecatonica senior Kaitlyn Linder scored nine points and had six rebounds.

The Vikings will host New Glarus Thursday.



Darlington 56, Belmont 45

DARLINGTON - The Redbirds opened the season with a 56-45 win over Belmont Tuesday.

Darlington (1-0) raced out to a 15-8 first-quarter lead en route to running away with a season-opening win.

The Redbirds built a 12-point second-half lead they never relinquished.

Darlington senior Ashley Martin scored 19 points to lead the Redbirds and junior Kelsey Fink added 11.

"I think this game will give us some confidence heading into the next game we play," Darlington coach Adam Rotar said.

Rotar credited the Redbirds' defense for the fast start.

"Coming out with a lot of energy and effort on the defensive end," Rotar said, was key.

Argyle 49, Shullsburg 41

SHULLSBURG - On Tuesday, Argyle opened the season with a 49-41 win over Shullsburg.

The Orioles jumped out to a 13-7 lead over the Miners. The Orioles extended their lead to eight points in the second half by outscoring the Miners in the third quarter.

Argyle junior Kelsey Bartels scored a team-high 13 points and sophomore Cortney Gilbertson added 10.
