BELOIT - The Darlington-Cuba City girls golf team shot an even par 71 at the eight-team Beloit Scramble Tuesday, good for fifth place.

The Redbirds shot an even par 37 on the front, carding a birdie and a bogey, and finished with an even par 34 on the back. The five-player team consisted of seniors Naomi Black, Kayla Paquette, Nikki Zimmerman and Kaitlyn Wall and junior Sami Poss.

Sun Prairie won the meet, which consisted of all Division 1 teams except for Darlington-Cuba City, with an 8-under-63.

"The girls played well," Redbirds coach Gary Ringen said. "It was a tough course, and we're pretty pleased. We were there last year, and we improved by three strokes."

Regardless of the outcome, Ringen said the nature of the meet gave his team an early-season opportunity to grow as a unit.

In the scramble, all five girls played side by side, advancing from the best shot of the group.

"It's a great tournament for building respect for each other and camaraderie," Ringen said. "It's relaxed. They encourage each other.

"When you're playing on your own score, if you have a bad shot, it might affect the next one and the next one. When the season begins, you're all on your own."

The meet also required that each team use every player's drive at least twice. That, coupled with the length of the course, gave the Redbirds another opportunity to grow.

"This was a distance that our girls were not familiar with, which was good," Ringen said. "They had to reach in and find something."

The Redbirds are coming off a 13-0 season in 2011 in which they won the Southwest Wisconsin Activities League.

The team's next meet is a triangular against Lena-Winslow and Stillman Valley (Ill.) today, Aug. 16. The meet will be held at Wolf Hollow Golf Course in Lena at 4 p.m.

On Friday, the Redbirds will host an 18-hole invitational at the Darlington Country Club, beginning at 9 a.m.
