DARLINGTON - Junior running back Trevor Johnson had a breakout game rushing for 218 yards and scoring four touchdowns to power Darlington to a 57-21 win over Mineral Point Friday.

Darlington (4-0, 2-0 SWAL) entered the unbeaten showdown with the Pointers knowing they had to make Mineral Point one-dimensional in their prolific spread offense.

Johnson had three touchdown runs and an 18-yard TD catch from junior quarterback Jared Meister.

"He (Johnson) got some counters and reverses and really had some big runs," Darlington coach Scott Zywicki said. "Once he got in the open field they were not going to catch him. He really shined tonight."

Darlington, ranked No. 3 in the Associated Press small school division state poll, gashed the Pointers for 392 rushing yards. Darlington junior fullback Hunter Johnson rushed for 104 yards on 12 carries and scored two touchdowns including a 44-yard TD run in the third quarter.

"We now still control our own destiny, which is important," Zywicki said. "We beat a quality team with a dynamic quarterback and a good offense."

Mineral Point quarterback Scotty Pittz rushed for 196 yards on 35 carries and scored two touchdowns. He completed just 5 of 19 passes for 65 yards with three interceptions.

"It's very difficult because they spread you out of the box to cover their wide receivers," Zywicki said. "Their offensive line is much better than last year."

The Redbirds scored 20 points off three turnovers.

Darlington senior Conrad Blosch opened up the scoring with a 2-yard TD plunge with 8 minutes, 34 seconds left in the first quarter. Hunter Johnson recovered a fumble to set up the first scoring opportunity. Junior Brayden McDonald had a 70-yard interception return for a touchdown to help the Redbirds take a 13-0 lead. Darlington junior Jesse Sturtz also had an interception for the Redbirds.

The Redbirds have forced three turnovers or more in every game this season.

"That is something we have done in every game this year," Zywicki said. "It gives our offense more opportunities."

Darlington will travel to Cuba City next Friday.
