DARLINGTON - The Darlington boys basketball team put on a shooting display knocking down eight 3-pointers en route to a 63-29 season-opening 63-29 win over Riverdale Thursday.
Darlington junior Ben Muhlstein scored a team-high 14 points and made two 3-pointers. Senior Cade Hardyman had 10 points and hit two 3-pointers. Junior Cole McDonald also knocked down two 3-pointers.
"We usually don't start out the season with a conference game," Darlington coach Mike Hopkins said. "It was a good win for us."
Hopkins said the defensive intensity by the Redbirds was a key in the victory.
Riverdale upset Darlington last year when they shot better than 60 percent in a game at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville.
"We held their top shooter down," Hopkins said. "We shut their big guy down."
It was the first game for the Redbirds after several players are coming off a state runner-up finish in football.
"There is still some rust," Hopkins said. "Some guys still have some aches and pains from football."
Darlington will host Barneveld Monday, Dec. 9 and will then host Shullsburg at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 10 as part of a boys' and girls' doubleheader. The Darlington girls basketball team will take on Benton-Shullsburg after the boys' game.
Monticello 63, Juda 23
MONTICELLO - The Monticello boys basketball team saw themselves trailing by six points during a stretch in the first quarter, but put together a 29-2 run that lasted midway into the third quarter and ended up with a 63-23 victory over Six Rivers East foe Juda.
Junior Ben May led the way for the Ponies, scoring a game-high 22 points for Monticello, who also got solid contributions from seniors Lucas Marty, Logan Crooks and Forrest Havens, each scoring 18, nine and nine points respectively.
The Panthers were led by freshman Matthew Schmitt and junior Cory Segner, who each had nine points.
Barneveld 60, Pecatonica 50
PECATONICA - For the Pecatonica Vikings boys basketball team on Thursday, the fourth quarter was the difference in a closely played game against visiting Barneveld. The Vikings fell short after being outscored 24-14 in the fourth quarter, losing 60-50.
Late game miscues opened the door for Barneveld to take the lead after the Vikings came into the second half with a nine-point advantage.
"We led early, (but) we knew going into halftime they (Barneveld) would make some adjustments," Pecatonica coach Matthew Fink said.
Overall, Fink said he is pleased with the direction that his team is heading.
"I really think we're making some strides," he said.
Pecatonica junior Drew Schliem had 10 points.
