MONROE - Dylan Scace wasn't going to let the wind dictate his racing strategy at the Glendenning Invitational on Monday.
The Monroe High School sophomore ran away with the 1,600-meter run title, winning the race by nine seconds with a time of 4 minutes, 44.29 seconds. Sugar River senior Tyler Gilbertson took second in the 1,600 (4:53.83). Scace and junior Parker Ingold, who took fourth (5:01.26), helped Monroe White finish strong.
"To run for time you definitely had to work the backstretch," Scace said. "I felt like the wind slowed me down a little bit. You are tired out there after three laps, and the wind is trying to resist you from running."
Scace has set a goal of running the mile in 4:30 by the end of the season, and he has big expectations for the Cheesemakers' 3,200 relay by the end of the year.
"Our main goal is to make it to state," Scace said. "We have a lot of strong guys running for that spot."
Monroe boys track coach Scott Mosher split the Cheesemakers into two teams - Monroe Red and Monroe White. Darlington won the 11-team meet, racking up 166 points to outdistance Benton-Scales Mound-Shullsburg (123.5). The Monroe White team took third (104), and the Monroe Red team was fourth (102.5). Sugar River finished fifth (74), and Albany took sixth (43), followed by Monticello in seventh (33) and Black Hawk and Pecatonica-Argyle in a tie for 10th (1).
"The guys got all into it to see what team could win it," Mosher said. "They were pretty even. It leveled the playing field and made it more fun. To have two teams score over 100 points really shows our depth. It was the first outdoor meet for every team, and it was the first meet for many guys."
Darlington swept the top two spots in the 3,200. Darlington junior Conner Hackett won (10:36.89), and senior teammate Sean Barbee took second (10:39.90). Monroe sophomore Drake Ingold finished third in the 3,200 (10:42.99).
Monticello junior Max Hoffmaster won the 200 (24.94), and Monroe White's Jevon Gibson took third (25.42).
Monticello senior Andy Yaun came back to clip Monroe senior Thang Lu at the finish to win the 400 with a time of 53.36 seconds. Lu took second (54.14). Lu went on to finish first in the 800 (2:04.32) by 11 seconds.
"(Lu) was running the 800 angry because he was disappointed in how he finished the 400," Mosher said. "To win the 800 by 11 seconds is amazing."
Darlington sophomore Tanner Evenstad took third in the 800 (2:15.67).
Darlington sophomore Grady Rielly won the 110 hurdles with a personal-best time of 16.5 seconds, and he finished first in the 300 hurdles (46.06). Darlington junior Mitchell Wagner won the high jump (6-foot) and took second in the 300 hurdles (47.91). Teammate Trevor Johnson took second in the high jump (5-10). Monroe Red's Trevor Aebly was third (48.06) in the 300 hurdles.
"It was a little tougher with the wind," Rielly said. "The wind was a factor. I still ran hard."
Rielly didn't really start running the hurdles until he was a freshman last year. Rielly knows it takes the right mindset to attack the high hurdles.
"The key is just running fast," he said. "You have to be confident, too."
Monroe sophomore Brayden Zettle won the triple jump (40-7), and Wagner took second (40-0). Zettle didn't eclipse 40 feet last year until conference.
"To jump 40-7 this early in the year is impressive," Mosher said.
Sugar River senior Landon Zimmerman finished first in the discus (150-4) and was second in the shot put (48-11).
The Cheesemakers had the top two relays in the 1,600 relay. The Monroe Red relay team of senior Dominic Curtiss, sophomore Jake Meier, sophomore Jonah Tostrud and senior Alex Koller won the race with a time of 3:44.11. The Monroe White team's relay that took second was made up of sophomore Jason Koller, freshman Anthany Hernandez, Zettle and Scace and finished in 3:47.59. The Redbirds took third (3:47.96).
