MONTICELLO - The Darlington volleyball team finished second place at the season-opening Six Rivers tournament Saturday.

Darlington defeated Black Hawk 25-13, 25-12 to advance to the championship match. River Ridge knocked off the Redbirds for the title 25-23, 25-23.

"I think it was a good starting point," Darlington coach Jen Schwartz said. "We didn't have a scrimmage and we have three sophomores in the starting lineup. It was an experience for them to get rolling. We are learning to play together."

Each team played three two-set pool matches. The Redbirds defeated Monticello in two sets and beat Shullsburg in two sets. Darlington split two games with Pecatonica, but finished 5-1 in pool play to advance to the winner's bracket. Pecatonica went 3-3 and advanced to the consolation bracket.

Pecatonica defeated Albany 25-13, 25-19 in the winner's bracket. In the consolation championship, Pecatonica pulled out a three-set win over Juda 25-12, 23-25, 15-13.

"We look at it as a confidence-builder going into the season," Pecatonica coach Tori Leonard said. "We also know everyone will be improving as the season goes along. We still have work to do."

The Vikings knocked off Monticello in pool play 25-15, 25-11 and Shullsburg knocked them off in two sets 25-23, 25-21. Pecatonica beat Darlington 25-23 and then lost a second set 25-19.

Pecatonica senior outside hitter Clara Moen racked up 22 kills, seven aces and four digs in the tournament. Senior middle hitter Britt Miller had a team-high 17 blocks and junior setter Liz Tisch had 68 assists. Leonard was excited the Vikings pulled out a three set match against Juda, a Six Rivers East Conference rival they will see two more times this season.

"I think the key was our staying consistent serving," Leonard said.

Monticello went 1-5 in sets in pool play. The Ponies lost two sets to the Redbirds and Vikings. Monticello split two games with Shullsburg and then dropped a consolation match to Juda.

"There is a learning curve," Monticello coach Scott Smice said. "We had quite a few kids out of position. We need to work on our serving. I thought that would be one of our better attributes. We need to get better at serve receive and passing to be more competitive down the road."
