Redbirds outlast Wildcats

DARLINGTON - Sophomore Kennedy Rankin scored a team-high 15 points to lift the Darlington High School girls basketball team to a 55-51 win over Southwestern Thursday night.

Darlington (2-4, 1-1 SWAL) jumped out to a 28-23 lead in the first half.

Darlington junior Taylor Jacobson scored 12 points for the Redbirds, and sophomore Emma Crist added eight points. Senior Molly McDaniel and junior Taryn Rankin each chipped in seven points. Kennedy Rankin connected on two of the Redbirds' three 3-pointers.

Southwestern senior Michelle Budden scored a game-high 25 points.

The Redbirds will have 19 days before their next game at Belmont.



Brodhead 60, McFarland 53

MCFARLAND - Brodhead turned up its defense in the second half and pulled away from McFarland to stay unbeaten.

Senior Kylie Moe scored 15 of her team-high 24 points in the second half, and sophomore Erin Nyhus scored 10 of her 12 points in the second half to spark Brodhead (6-0, 4-0 Rock Valley South).

"Kylie and Erin hit some big shots in the second half," Brodhead coach Brian Kammerer said. "I thought in the first half we didn't rotate to the ball well on help side. I thought we did better in the second half limiting them to on shot per possession."

The Cardinals outscored McFarland 35-28 in the second half to seal the win.

Moe hit three 3-pointers and Nyhus made two 3-pointers. Brodhead senior Amber Pickel added 12 points.



Black Hawk 49, Pecatonica 23

BLANCHARDVILLE - Black Hawk sophomore Hannah Herbst scored a game-high 15 points and knocked down three 3-pointers to power the Warriors to a win over Pecatonica.

Black Hawk (4-2, 2-0 Six Rivers East) closed the first half on a 17-2 run to take a 24-9 lead at the half.

"We couldn't make a shot," Pecatonica coach Bobby Rose said. "We played good defense. We are moving the ball and getting good shots. Until we get some to fall it's tough to keep going."

Black Hawk senior Aleigha Sigafus added 13 points. The Warriors made 10 of 18 free throws compared to the Vikings, who shot 8 of 21 from the foul line.

Pecatonica's Sam Erickson scored six points to lead the Vikings (1-4, 0-1).
