Redbirds excel at Darlington Invite

DARLINGTON - Redbirds junior Alex Erickson had a banner meet and was named the most outstanding male athlete at the Darlington Invite Friday.

Erickson won the 200-meter dash (23.28 seconds), 400 (:52.72), the long jump (20-feet, 6 inches) and he had a hand in winning the 1,600-meter relay.

No team scores were kept at the meet, but Darlington turned in some impressive performances. Fellow junior Tucker Wiegel took fourth in the 100 (:11.69), third in the long jump (18-feet, 8-inches) and he was a key cog in the 800-meter and 1,600 relays.

Erickson and Wiegel teamed up with Trynton Schwartz and Cedric Flesher to win the 1,600 relay with a time of 3 minutes, 37.38 seconds. The Redbirds also had a second 1,600 relay team including Jordan Bryson, Mitchell Langkamp, Levi Wedig and Aaron Stauffacher that took third (3:45.45).

Pecatonica-Argyle sophomore Wyatt Massey won the 800 (2:08.84) and Connor Roche was second (2:10.69). Monticello's Reid Zanoya finished second in the 400 (:54.75) behind Erickson and Darlington's Matt McDaniel was third (:55.84).

Black Hawk senior Cody Foster won both the 110 high hurdles (:16.85) and the 300 hurdles (:44.56). Darlington's Braden Zywicki took second in the 110 hurdles (:16.92). Black Hawk's Bryant Luhman won the shot put (42-11), just ahead of Monticello's Troy Berg (42-7). Berg did win the discus with a throw of 107-1.

Black Hawk junior Jacob Meier finished third in the triple jump (38-0.75) and he was fourth in the long jump (18-6.75).

The Redbirds dominated the long distance events. Darlington sophomore Michael Sinclair won the 1,600 (5:06.46) and fellow sophomore Kent Miehe finished first in the 3,200 (10:58.17) ahead of Pecatonica-Argyle junior Chris James (11:05.02), who was second, and Darlington freshman Garth Garrison, who was third (11:19.28).

The Redbirds' 3,200 relay team of Stauffacher, Roche, Miehe and Quinn Cullen finished first with a time of 9:01.34. Pecatonica-Argyle's 3,200 relay team of James, Cameron Colson, Marcus Rubio and Massey took second (9:54.89).

The Redbirds had two of the top three high jumpers. Darlington senior Bruce King finished second (6-0) and junior Zach Brown was third (5-10). The Redbirds had the top two pole vaulters. Sophomore Mitchell Whalen won the pole vault (11-0) and Wedig was second (9-6).

Whalen and Wedig teamed with Flesher and Langkamp to take second in the 400 relay (:47.07). The Redbirds' 800-relay team of Wiegel, Cody Erickson, Schwartz and Langkamp also took second with a time of 1:36.70.
