DARLINGTON - The Darlington softball team lost three games in a Southwestern tournament in Hazel Green Saturday.
Southwestern slugged its way to a 19-8 win over the Redbirds in a game that was suspended due to a rain delay May 3. Dodgeville rolled to a 21-3 five-inning win over the Redbirds and Argyle, then topped Darlington 10-4.
In the game against Southwestern, the Wildcats had a five-run second inning and a four-run third to take a 9-1 lead. The Redbirds rallied with a five-run fifth to cut the Wildcats' lead to 13-6.
Darlington juniors Kennedy Wagner and Holly Ray each went 3-for-4 with two RBIs. The Redbirds had 16 hits compared to 20 hits for the Wildcats. Darlington freshman Alyssa Tuescher and junior Taylor Crist were each 3-for-4.
Tuescher pitched a complete game and gave up 19 runs on 20 hits. She struck out two and walked five. The Redbirds had five errors.
Southwestern's Rachel Myers went 4-for-6 with four runs scored and two RBIs. Southwestern's Abby Budden drove in three runs.
In Darlington's game against Dodgeville, the Dodgers broke the game open with a 10-run third inning. The Dodgers scored four runs in the fourth and seven runs in the fifth. Dodgeville's Ellie Argall went 4-for-5 with six RBIs. The Dodgers pounded out 23 hits in five innings.
Ray went 2-for-3, and Darlington senior Chelsie Golackson had two RBIs.
Crist pitched two innings and gave up six runs on three hits. She struck out three and didn't issue a walk. Teammate Kaylyn McGuire, a freshman, pitched three innings and gave up 15 runs on 20 hits, while striking out one and walking one.
In the game against Argyle, the Redbirds committed six errors. The Orioles had a four-run first to jump out to an early lead on the Redbirds. Darlington scored three runs in the top of the fourth to cut the Orioles' lead to 6-3. However, Argyle answered by scoring two runs in the bottom of the fourth to extend the lead back to five-runs, 8-3.
Argyle senior Erin Bruehlman went 3-for-3 with two RBIs, and senior teammate Brianne Connors finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored and one RBI. Junior Kirsten Ostby also scored two runs.
Tuescher pitched six innings and gave up 10 runs (five earned) on 10 hits. She struck out three and walked seven.
Argyle junior Natalie Romdenne tossed a complete game to get the win. She gave up three runs on 13 hits, struck out three and didn't issue a walk.
Golackson went 4-for-4 with one RBI to lead the Redbirds. Lucy Heinberg and Crist were each 2-for-4.
