Highland 49, Monticello 44
HIGHLAND - Monticello had a five-point lead with about 4 minutes to go in the fourth quarter, but couldn't slam the door on Highland.
The Cardinals rallied to edge Monticello 49-44 in a non-conference game Saturday. Monticello senior Ben May scored a game-high 30 points and drilled five 3-pointers.
"We just didn't handle the end of the game situations very well," Monticello coach Mark Olson said. "We needed to finish possessions. We just didn't finish like we should have."
With the loss, Monticello drops to 1-4, 0-1 Six Rivers East.
"These games are giving us good experience," Olson said. "Hopefully, we have learned what we have to do late in the game to close it out."
Monticello will host two conference rivals this week. The Ponies will host Argyle on Tuesday and Juda Friday. Olson is looking forward to the conference games.
"Riley Ostby is a talented scorer and they (Argyle) have other guys who can fill it up too," he said. "We will have to defend."
