MADISON - The Darlington-Cuba City girls golf team finished fifth at the Division 2 regionals Tuesday, one spot from qualifying for sectionals, but the Redbirds will be sending three individuals.
Edgewood was the top team at the regional, with a team score of 311. Edgerton came in second with a 360, followed by Cambridge (381) and McFarland (389). The Redbirds finished nine strokes out of qualifying with a 398.
However, the top four individuals not on any of the sectional - qualifying teams also advance, and that group included Darlington-Cuba City seniors Naomi Black, and Kayla Paquette and junior Sami Poss. Prairie du Chien's Cierra Nicholson also qualified.
Black shot a 95, and Paquette and Poss both shot 99s. Nicholson shot a 98.
Seniors Nikki Zimmerman and Tina Kurschner rounded Darlington's team card with a 105 and 114, respectively.
The four individuals will play in the sectionals Monday morning at Trapper's Turn Golf Club in Wisconsin Dells.
Darlington coach Gary Ringen said his golfers will have an 18-hole practice as a team Sunday and will stay overnight at a resort: "kind of a little perk," he said.
The Redbirds made it to sectionals as a team last year, and even though they didn't do it this year Ringen said he was pleased with how his team competed.
"They played real well," he said. "That's a pretty tough course. They've got huge greens, and the greens are lightning fast. Three of them did go up and did a practice round. I think that helped them a little."
He said at first the toughness of the course made some of the girls nervous. But when Black, Paquette and Poss saw their sectional-qualifying scores at the end, Ringen said they were happy.
"They were very excited," he said. "This is kind of a goal for them, I think, to get to the sectional. They were really relieved and glad to be able to do that."
Trapper's Turn does present a sizable challenge, but the Redbirds do have experience on their side.
"We were there last year as a team, so they've all been there," Ringen said. "Trapper's Turn is a challenge. It's a course designed for carts, and they've gotta walk it."
