MONROE - Even before the season began, Monroe head coach Miriam O'Neill expected Milton to be one of the top teams in the Badger South. The Red Hawks lived up to that billing Thursday with a 3-1 win over the Cheesmakers.

The Cheesemakers couldn't overcome a steady diet of Milton's Ashley Roherty, who scored three goals in the first half. Roherty got her first goal in the 12th minute, then scored in the 21st minute on an assist from Sarah Spaulding to give the Red Hawks a 2-0 lead. Spaulding set up Roherty for another goal to give Milton a 3-0 cushion at 25:20.

Freshman Vanessa Studer got the Cheesemakers on the board in the first half with an unassisted goal at 35:20.

Trailing 3-1 at intermission, the Cheesemakers felt they had a chance in the second half, but were shut out by Milton goallkeeper Megan Black who had 10 saves.

"It was very physical," said O'Neill. "We knew we had to look for Roherty, but we had a hard time shutting her down in the first half."

Goalkeeper Katie Coplien had 15 saves for the Cheesemakers.

Monroe (6-5-1, 1-4 Badger South) will host McFarland in a non-conference match Monday.
