OREGON — Wiota outfielders Jeff Solberg and Tommy Meier each drove in a pair of runs to lead the visiting Indians over the Oregon Orioles, 8-2, in a Western Section Home Talent League baseball game at Oregon High School on Sunday, July 1.

Ben Conway (2-1) picked up the victory on the mound, allowing one run after scattering five hits and four walks and striking out seven batters over seven innings of work for the Indians (8-6 overall, 5-4 Sunday League).

Mitch Marty doubled and scored in the top of the first to put Wiota into the lead to stay, and then he drove in the eventual winning run with a RBI-single in the fourth inning that put the Indians up 3-0.

Solberg hit a two-run double and scored on a base hit by Meier in the seventh to extend the lead to 6-1. Meier added a RBI-single in the ninth to help seal the win.

Solberg and Marty each had three hits with a double on the day to lead Wiota’s 13-hit attack. 

Merrill Brunson went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and a RBI, while Meier went 2-for-4 with two RBI and Brad Schliem added a double and a run for the Indians.

At Argyle, on Thursday, June 28, five Indians drove in a run and scored another to put down the host Beavers, 8-1, for a HTL South Section Night League victory.

The Indians (3-2 NL) scored four times in the top of the fourth inning to erase a 1-0 deficit, and they plated three insurance run in the top of the seventh to put the game away.

Pitcher Tommy Meier surrendered just one unearned run on five hits and three walks over six innings of work while fanning 10 batters to earn the win, and he helped his own cause with a RBI and a run.

Will Schwartz and Jesse Sturtz each registered two hits with a run and a RBI apiece. Matt Keister and Hayden Hardyman each singled with a run and a RBI for Wiota.

Tyler Henneman went 2-for-3 with a RBI to lead Argyle.

Wiota hosted Blanchardville on in a Sunday League game on Wednesday, July 4, starting at 1 p.m., and the Indians will welcome Argyle to Wiota Park for another SL game on Sunday, July 8, also at 1 p.m.
