MONROE — The annual Monroe City Tennis Singles Tournament was held on July 4 after the original date had been rained out.
“We had an early start at 7 a.m., and played until about 11:30 a.m. and were forced to delay as storms rolled through,” said Matt Bordner, tournament director. “We squeegeed courts and were able to resume play around 4 p.m. and finished the tournament around 7 p.m.”
For the men’s division, there were 12 entries.
“Guillermo Noriega had a fantastic day and won the bracket, beating Suresh Kumar, Ryan Mathiason, and then Frank Meier in the championship. Frank took second place and had what was likely the match of the day in a very competitive semi-final victory against Matthew Setterstrom,” Bordner said.
In the women’s division, there were just four entries, but all of the participants played well in the round robin format, Bordner said. Tessa Brown won the title, with notable wins over Jenn Perry-Jones (8-6) and Liz Luan (8-3).
“Overall, we squeezed in 23 matches at Rec Park and had a lot of fun with the tournament this year,” Bordner said.
