MONROE — The Monroe Parks and Recreation Department has openings in many upcoming activities for children this summer.

Registration for all activities may be done online or by stopping at the Parks and Recreation office: 1110 18th Ave (lower level of City Hall). Call the Parks & Recreation Office with questions at 329-2460.

Openings include:

Lifeguard Training Class

On the first day, participants are tested in three areas — distance swimming, treading water and a timed dive and swim. Participants will swim 300 yards continuously while demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing; tread water for two minutes using the legs only; and complete a timed event within 1 minute and 40 seconds which includes a 25-yard swim to retrieve a 10-pound brick, return to surface and swim 25-yards to the starting point. They need to pass all three things in order to continue with the course.

After Pretest Certification Requirements are: Attend all class sessions without any absenteeism; demonstrate competency in all required skills and activities; and correctly answer at least 80% of the questions on the three sections of the final written exam. Upon successful completion of all of these requirements the student will receive their Lifeguarding/First Aid certificate valid for two years and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer valid for two years and Water Park Certification.
