MONROE — The Alpine Curling Club hosted a leg of and provided two teams for the CANAM Cup of Curling on Wednesday, Nov. 13.

“The U.S. Curling Association approached us if we would be willing to host a couple games,” Club President Steve Johnson said. “It’s a great experience for our club to meet people from Canada. It’s an opportunity to show them good hospitality and have our Swiss touch with the alphorns and Swiss-themed lunch.”

The CANAM Cup is a contest between Canadian and American curlers that occurs every five years, alternating locations. This is the second-ever to be held, with five Canadian curling teams comprised of 20 total men visiting 28 American curling clubs in five different states.

The tour began on Nov. 2 in St. Paul, Minnesota and ends on Nov. 19 in Detroit, Michigan. In that time, the Canadian team will play a total of 107 games.

The Alpine Curling Club was the 15th game on the 11th day. Monroe provided two teams — skip Duke Goetz, vice skip Curt Wyttenback, second Paul Morris and lead Mike Taft; and skip Eric Johnson, vice skip John Bazley, second Nicholas Welty and lead Chris Bennett — to play against Canada’s Team Nonnan — skip James Noonan, vice skip Joe Kapron, second Frank Willoughby and lead Cole Tenetuik — and Team Shea — skip Wayne Shea, vice George Koke, second Mark Inglis and lead Ian MacDonald.

Team Goetz fell to Team Shea 13-4, while Team Johnson defeated Team Noonan 11-5.

Final results and the winners of the CANAM Cup will not be known until the end of the tour. Coming into the contest at Alpine, the Canadians had a formidable lead. Based on the 2019 results, the Americans hold the traveling trophy.
