MONROE — Monroe Parks and Recreation Department will offer additional swimming lessons this summer, and announced other changes at the public pool.

Two, three-week sessions will run Mondays and Wednesdays from July 27 to Aug. 14. The first session is from 5:15 to 5:45 p.m., and the second from 6 to 6:30 p.m.

A two-week session will run from 10:15-10:45 a.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from July 27 to Aug. 7.

There are several levels of swimming lessons. Pre-school swim lessons and Levels 1, and 2 need someone in the water with them to avoid contact with non-family members. Parents, grandparents, babysitter, or an older sibling need to go into the water with the child. The instructor will teach the children to swim and the parent will be there to hold the child and help manipulate their arms and legs if need be. Instructors will be out of the water on the pool deck wearing face masks.

Level 3 may be tested to see if swimmers need parent with them in the water.

Levels 4, 5 and 6 are for advanced swimmers and will be taught by instructor from the pool deck.

A lifeguard aide is in the water with a facemask to demonstrate when necessary.

A parent may assist two children at the same time. However, if there is only one adult, children will need to be at the same swim level even if they would normally be at different levels. It is recommended to choose the lower level.

There are two water exercise classes for adults as well. Water Zumba, sponsored by Monroe Clinic-SSM Health with certified instructor Connie Wyssbrod, will take place from 5:15-6 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays until Aug. 20. Water Aerobics with Bridget Cotter, fitness director at the Senior Center and certified instructor, will be from 10-10:45 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays until the end of the season.

With summer halfway gone, season pool passes are half price. Purchases can be made at the Parks and Recreation office in the lower portion of City Hall, or online at monroewi.activityreg.com.

There are currently four open swims daily at the pool with limited capacity — 93 in the Olympic-sized swimming pool, and 15 in the wading pool for young children. A change for July is that swimmers can now go back and forth between both pools. Open swims on weekdays are from 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.; 1-2:45 p.m.; 3-4:45 p.m.; and 6-7:30 p.m. There will be no lunchtime open swim on weekends.

Adult swim will be from 10-1:50 a.m. and 5-5:50 p.m. on weekdays, and from 7-8 a.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. On weekends, adult swim is from 5-5:50 p.m.

Reservations are recommended for open swim use, with the department using “Sign up Genius” on its website. The department uses its Facebook page to post the available slots for each open swim. No reservation is needed for adult swim.
