Hilliard, Badgers move to 3-2 with OT win over Valpo

MADISON — Monroe graduate Sydney Hilliard scored 25 points to lead the Wisconsin women’s basketball team to an 89-82 win over Valparasio Dec. 20 at the Kohl Center.

The Badgers led by as much as 12 in the game, but the Crusaders shot their way back into it. Valpo took nearly 2/3 of its shot from beyond the arc, hitting 14 of 42 tries (33%), including 7 of 17 in the second half (41%). However, the Crusaders missed all seven of its shots from deep in the overtime period, and scored just one basket in all of the extra time.

Meanwhile, the Badgers went to work in the overtime period, hitting 4 of 8 shots — all 2-point attempts. Hilliard sealed the game with a jumper in the paint with 17 seconds left. Hilliard also had 9 assists and 4 rebounds.

Julie Pospisilova scored 23 points for Wisconsin, hitting five 3s in the process, and Imani Lewis had a double-double with 19 points and 11 boards. 

Hortonville graduate Shay Frederick of Valpo was 7 of 14 from beyond the arc and led all scorers with 27 points.

Wisconsin (3-2, 0-1 Big Ten) now enters Big Ten play in full and is scheduled to play next at Michigan Dec. 31 before hosting Minnesota Jan. 3 and Northwestern Jan. 6.
