Darlington native Miehe misses marathon cut by 18 minutes

Darlington native Tyson Miehe (468) won the Madison Half Marathon in November and finished fifth in the California International Marathon in December. He qualified for the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials, set for Feb. 29 in Atlanta.

ATLANTA — Darlington native Tyson Miehe finished 127th at the U.S. Men’s Olympic Marathon Trials Feb. 29 in Atlanta.

Miehe’s time of 2 hours, 28 minutes and 24 seconds was just more than 19 minutes behind champion Galen Rupp, a Nike sponsored runner. Jacob Riley (2nd, 2:10:02) and Abdi Abdirahman (3rd, 2:20:03) also qualified.

Miehe averaged about 5 minutes, 40 seconds per mile. His first mile took 5 minutes, 15 seconds to complete. His next two miles were each sub-5 minutes. As the race wore on his time swelled. His final two miles took nearly seven minutes each. 

Temperatures in Atlanta reach the mid-50s with a winds between 7-10 miles per hour. The Olympics are scheduled to be held July 24 to Aug. 9 in Tokyo.
