MONROE — The Monroe Parks and Recreation Department held its annual City Doubles Tournament June 26. The Singles tournament had been scheduled for June 25, but was rained out. It will be made up July 4. Anyone interested in registering for Men’s Singles or Women’s Singles can contact Matt Bordner (815-990-6547) to enter the tournament. The tournament starts at 8 a.m. and registration closes at noon on Sunday, July 3.
“Sunday (June 26) was a beautiful day for tennis,” said Bordner, the Monroe High School tennis coach and the director of the tournament. “We had 7 entries in men’s doubles, 5 entries in women’s doubles, and 7 entries in mixed doubles. There were a lot of familiar faces this year but also some new entries which was great.”
Guillermo Noriega and Kevin Noriega, a father and son pairing, won the Men’s Doubles Tournament, with Chris Giasson and Matthew Setterstrom finishing second and Matt and Kyle Bordner taking third.
“In Men’s Doubles, Guillermo and Kevin Noriega dominated the day and won the championship match 6-1, 6-1. It was really fun seeing a father/son duo from Monroe take home the championship. They played with great energy all day,” Matt Bordner said.
Emily Boyd and Kelsey Erickson won the Women’s Doubles flight, with Stephanie Dinderman and Terry Rizzo second. Uli Dornhagen and Pat Lai were third.
“In Women’s Doubles, Emily Boyd and Kelsey Erickson continued to defend their women’s champion title and won their championship match over Stephanie Dinderman and Terry Rizzo, 6-3, 6-1. They’ve had an incredible stretch of winning the women’s bracket and have been playing in the Monroe City Tournament since they were 15 years old,” Matt Bordner said.
In the Mixed Doubles bracket, Ed Schradermeier and Uli Dornhagen won the championship over Emily and Jerod Boyd, 6-2, 6-3. Giasson and Sydnee Conway were third.
“We decided to bring back mixed doubles this year, and I’m really glad we did. We had a great time in this bracket, as there was a nice blend of experienced players and athletes,” Matt Bordner said. “Ed and Uli had been familiar with winning the Monroe Mixed Doubles Tournament, and so I think they were really excited to see it back in action this year and have an opportunity to come back and compete for another championship.”
