DARLINGTON — Just as the second night of racing at Lafayette County Speedway was about to start June 12, rain poured on the fairgrounds in Darlington.
After 20 minutes of off-and-on showers, drivers wanted to race and collectively pulled out onto the track and packed the wet mud and clay. In about an hour, the speedway was race ready once again.
Thirteen 4-cylinders led the night, but in the end it was Eric Beau (23) from Benton winning the race. Second went to Troy Pokoj (49) from Apple River and third to Ryan Petta (64) from German Valley.
The track’s newest class, the hobby stocks, had a showing of nine cars for the 10-lap feature. Dakota Simonsen (60) from Fairfax, Iowa, redeemed himself after getting disqualified the week before and won the race. Second went to David Crimmins (16C) of Dubuque and third went to Matt Bennett (24) from Shullsburg.
The 21 Sportmods race had multiple cautions and wrecks. A familiar face found his way to victory lane though as the Kyle Hoffmann (14) from Benton took first. Last week’s winner, Jason Roth (31) from Hazel Green took second, and longtime racer Zach Mauer (87) from Shannon came in third after a year off for back surgery.
Thirteen cars raced a grueling 18 laps in the Late Models, but it was once again the of Jamie Pfeiffer (56) from Freeport taking first. Second went to Travis Johnson (05J) from Darlington and third went to Georgetown’s DJ Sweet (3D).
A good car count in the Modified class to end the night reminded everyone why they are kings of the track. Once again, the 20-lap shootout proved too much to handle for some and the Jeff “Bone” Larson (B1) of Freeport won the race. His teammate, the Kenny Kostenbader (33K) from Freeport took second. Third went to hard charging Derek Thompson (34T) from Monroe.
The Lafayette County Speedway takes a pit stop this Friday, but is back in action on June 26, for the Malvern Banks Super Late Model show. This traveling series will feature some famous drivers, extremely fast cars and competitive races.
Joining the late models will be the Modifieds, Limited Late Models and Sportmods. To review the full 2020 season schedule and an updated points standings, or to find more information on an upcoming race, visit www.lafayettecountyspeedwaywi.com or check out Facebook.
