Rear back at home in green and gold

BLANCHARDVILLE - Frank Rear knows the area sports scene. The 61-year old has coached baseball all over Green County - at New Glarus (1985-1997) and Albany (2000-07) - and now has returned home to Lafayette County as an assistant coach for Pecatonica basketball with head coach and long-time friend Jim Syse.

The Rear coaching tree has continued to take root as son Stein skippers the New Glarus Tourists, a club on which his brother Chris also plays in Home Talent League baseball.

The elder Rear has won multiple conference championships coaching the Glarner Knights in his 12 years and brought the Comets their first conference championship since 1952. Nowadays, Rear gets to help bring along his nephew Drew Moen at Pecatonica High School, where he graduated from in 1965.

"Jimmy (Syse) just called me up and asked if I wanted to help out," Rear said. "He knew I wasn't do anything. I like to get out of the house."

"It keeps me young."

If you could have one superpower for a day, what would it be?

I like to travel, so I guess it would be to go to a World Series game in St. Louis.

Who do you most admire and why?

I've always admired (former Cardinals great) Stan Musial. I've always admired my high school coaches at Blanchardville.

What was the last good book you read?

A bed and breakfast book on Norway

If you could invite four people, living or dead, to dinner who would they be?

John F. Kennedy, my father and mom, King Olaf of Norway.

What's something you've always wanted to do, but haven't yet?

Have grandchildren, but they're coming. I'm going to be a grandpa in April and June.

What actor would you want to portray you in a movie?

Dustin Hoffman

If you could go back in time to one event in history what would it be?

World War II. I've always been a World War II buff, especially in Europe. It's just an interesting time in period of the world.

What's your favorite sports team?

St. Louis Cardinals, of course. I think it grew up in the family.

What gets your blood pressure rising?

Kids that don't listen. I've had a lot of those in my coaching experience. Some kids just don't listen at all.

What's one burning question you're dying to know the answer to?

Oh boy, that's a tough one. Probably, what's going to happen with the world events happening in Iran and Iraq.

What's your pet peeve?

Kids that don't listen. I've had a couple of sons that don't listen once in awhile too.

If you were elected president what would be the first thing you'd do?

Try and get world peace.

What's your least favorite task?

Cleaning my house. I keep a pretty clean house. I have all hardwood floors so it's easy. I just Swiffer
