JUDA - Amber Ramos and Tabatha Davis turned in a couple of dazzling pitching performances to lead Juda to the championship in their home tournament on Saturday.
Juda (13-6, 8-1 Six Rivers East) knocked off Racine Lutheran 3-2 in a 9-inning thriller and beat Shoreland Lutheran 5-1. Monticello and Argyle both finished the tournament 1-1.
Ramos pitched nine innings and gave up two runs on two hits. She struck out 13 and walked three.
"They (Racine Lutheran) are a solid team," Juda coach Bill Davis said. "The pitchers kept us in both games. The hitting still needs to come around. Defensively, we played really well."
With the game tied at 1, play progressed into the eighth inning and international tiebreaker rules took effect. The rules require each team to start the inning with a runner on second base. Morganne Goecks bunted Kirstie Kauk to third base, and the Panthers tied the game at 2 on a squeeze bunt by Davis.
Ramos pitched out of a two-on, one-out jam in the ninth behind back-to-back strikeouts to end the threat.
Juda senior C.J. Dunwiddie bunted for a single. After a wild throw to first, Goecks scored the game-winning run.
Davis turned in a solid pitching performance in the second game against Shoreland Lutheran. She tossed a complete game and gave up just one run on five hits. She struck out seven and didn't issue a walk. Juda senior Katlyn DeVoe went 2-for-4 with a double in the second game to lead the Panthers.
Monticello (11-4, 5-2 Six Rivers East) lost to Racine Lutheran and then beat Stockton 9-6. Argyle lost to Stockton 4-1 and then beat Shoreland Lutheran 7-4.
Sophomore Claire Bruns pitched five innings in the first game and gave up eight runs on five hits. Freshman Courtney Leuzinger tossed a complete game to get the win against Stockton. She gave up five earned runs. Leuzinger struck out six and walked three.
Monticello senior Tanya Smith went 4-for-4 with three RBIs against Stockton. Freshman Brooke Bidlingmaier was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.
"Racine Lutheran is a really good team and very well coached," Monticello coach Duane Garrison said. "They are probably one of the best hitting teams we have faced all year."
