LA CROSSE - Albany senior Jose Ramirez couldn't wait to run in his final state track meet.

Ramirez made the most of his final opportunity taking second place in the 800-meter run at the WIAA Division 3 state track and field meet Saturday, June 1.

"Coming in here as a freshman, I was part of the 4x800," Ramirez said. "I saw all the seniors run in their individual events. I wanted to be that one someday."

Albany doesn't have a track so Ramirez takes advantage of running around the school for training. It all paid off for Ramirez in his final state meet.

McDonell Central junior Nick Zander won the state title in the 800 (1 minute, 55.62 seconds) and captured the state title in the 1,600. Ramirez ran his best time of the season finishing in 1:59.87. Darlington senior Quinn Cullen finished 13th (2:02.82).

"I knew Zander was fast," Ramirez said. "I researched him and watched him run. I wanted to run with him. Boy, is he great. I gave it all I had in that run."

Fond du Lac Saint Mary's Springs edged Melrose-Mindoro 48-46 for the boys team title and Darlington took eighth (23). In the girls state meet,

Darlington junior Tyson Miehe finished as the state runner-up in the 1,600 with a time of 4:24.45. Zander won the 1,600 with a time of 4:20.62. Monticello sophomore John Zuber took 15th (4:44.72). After leading most of the first two laps, Miehe said Zander made a surge.

Miehe wasn't satisfied with his finish.

"I could have done a lot better," he said. "My PR is a 4:24 and I did it all by myself. You have to look at the positives I know, but at this point I can't because I'm really disappointed with this weekend. I have to not think about it for a week, get motivated and come back for cross country."

Darlington junior Kyle Johnson took fourth in the 110 high hurdles (15.51). Saint Mary's Springs senior Darin Ward captured the title (14.65) just ahead of Whiteall senior Brian Matthews (14.91). Rio senior Josh Selje took third (15.47) and Johnson edged Hillsboro junior Max Sebranek for fourth.

"I really gave it my all," Johnson said. "It's a great way to end the year. I edged Max out at the end. Darin is just a great athlete."
