BARABOO - In one of the fastest swimming sectionals in the state, Monroe turned in a series of personal record times but didn't qualify any swimmers for state.

The Cheesemakers finished ninth at the WIAA Division 2 Baraboo sectional Saturday.

The Cheesemakers' 200-yard freestyle relay team of sophomore Veronica Andraski, juniors Randi Robertson and Kendell Niffenegger and sophomore Leanna Schwartzlow finished eighth with a personal record time 1 minute, 48.59 seconds. The Cheesemakers broke their previous PR by almost three seconds.

Robertson said the goal was not placing, but cutting time.

"Getting the PR was our main focus for the relay," Robertson said.

Andraski echoed her teammate's sentiments.

"I didn't really think about that (placing)," Andraski said. "We just wanted to take off time."

Monroe coach Linda Moser wasn't surprised by the Cheesemakers' sectional surge.

"I have known all season long deep down inside of them, I knew they could do it," Moser said. "They just needed to get to a spot where they believed in themselves. They were very focused swimmers. I'm very ecstatic. They deserve it."

The Cheesemakers set a slew of personal bests. The Cheesemakers had two of the top 10 backstrokers, with Robertson finishing ninth with a PR of 1:04.31 and Andraski taking 10th with a season-best time of 1:04.87.

Schwartzlow finished 10th in the 200 individual medley with a season-best time 2:22.54, which was about three seconds from placing. Junior Sara Heitkamp was 15th (2:30.47), smashing her previous PR by seven seconds. Schwartzlow added a 10th-place finish in the 100 breaststroke (1:13.31).

The 200 medley relay team of Robertson, Schwartzlow, Niffenegger and Andraski took ninth with a season-best time of 1:59.95.

"The medley relay set the tone," Moser said. "Everyone had a PR today."

The 400 freestyle relay team of Andraski, Kylee Ritschard, Heitkamp and Niffenegger finished 10th with a season-best time 3:58.69.

In the 100 butterfly, Niffenegger took 13th with a season-best time of 1:06.19 and Heitkamp was 14th with a PR of 1:06.69.

"Everything just felt together," Niffenegger said.

Swimming against DeForest, a state champion, and perennial powers like Baraboo, Madison Edgewood and Milton could have been overwhelming, but the Cheesemakers focused on setting PR's.

"If you bring that (pressure to place against top teams) into play when you are practicing, you are dead before you get there," Moser said.

"These times are amazingly fast."
