BELLEVILLE - The Sugar River boys soccer team got a leg up for a repeat Capitol Conference championship by knocking off Lakeside Lutheran 3-1 Thursday.
"The two teams were No. 1 and 2 in the conference last year," Sugar River coach Jacob Ziehr said. "It was a big game."
Sugar River's Kevin Zimmerman scored the first goal on an assist from Dylan Hustad at 33 minutes, 28 seconds to give the Raiders a 1-0 lead.
Sugar River's Otto Anson scored a goal at 54:19 on a pass from Nehemiah Noriega to give the Raiders a 2-0 lead. Hustad tacked on the final goal.
With the win, the Raiders improve to 4-3, 2-0 Capitol Conference. Sugar River goalkeeper had five saves for the Raiders.
